The Nigeria Army has said a minor explosion has hit the Ikeja Cantonment farmland in Lagos.

The Nigeria Army yesterday posted on the official “X” account to explain that a minor explosion hit the farmland of the Ikeja Cantonment, near the Mammy Market .

“This is to notify the general public that today Monday 1 April 2024, a minor explosion occurred within the Nigerian Army (NA) Cantonment in Ikeja, Lagos. The incident occurred on a farmland near the Mammy Market within the Cantonment.”

Further investigation shows that burning of refuse had triggered the explosion, reports Nigerian Tribune.

“The explosion is suspected to have been triggered by the burning of refuse and other inflammable debris by a farmer who cultivated the farmland.

“Preliminary investigations suggest that the explosion may have been caused by the burning of refuse and other flammable materials by a farmer who was cultivating the land.”

Fortunately, no casualties were reported from the incident. However, given the recent clearance and certification of the Cantonment as free of unexploded ordnance, we understand there may be concerns among the public due to past incidents.

“The NA wants to reassure everyone that the situation is under control. The NA Engineers Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) team has secured the area and is conducting a thorough investigation into the cause of the explosion.

“We urge residents in the vicinity not to panic and assure them of their safety.”frontier
